PETER PUTMAN  Olean, Cattaraugus County

200011  22010.  Peter's wife was Mary Walters. They were living in Olean, NY, in 1810.  Olean was then a part of Niagara Co., NY. In 1830, Peter was in the same place, but it was called Hindsale, Cattaraugus County NY.  As I mentioned, Peter Putman married Mary Walters.  The elder person listed in Peter's 1820 household is likely Peter's father John Pottman who was listed in 1810 as living next door to Peter. From the History of Cattaraugus County, Peter Putman arrived in Cattaraugus in 1802 from the Delaware River Country.  Peter was born January 7, 1775.  History states also that Peter [and a brother] ran a raft of logs down to Ohio, and Peter then returned to Hinsdale, NY, and built a home.  In the 1880 census, we find Peter Putman's son also a John states that both his parents were born in Pennsylvania.  We know that David Pottman the son of Johannes Pootman of Schenectaday, NY, went to Monmouth County, NJ, near Centerville about 1710 and bought property there from Mathius Cornelise [Van Horne]. This was a Dutch family.  David Pottman likely had two sons:  John and Victor.  Victor Pottman was born about 1721 also likely in Monmouth Co., NJ.  Victor Pottman married Margaret Wies and attended the Smithfield Dutch Reformed Church just north of the Delaware River Gap, PA.  Victor and Margaret Potman likely had a son Peter born in 1760 who lived in Sussex Co., NJ, in the late 1700's and early 1800s before eventually settling in Yates Co., NY, where he died there about 1835.  Victor and Margaret Pottman also seem to have had a son named John Pottman who was the father of Peter Putman/Potman of Hinesdale, NY.  John Potman, Victor's assumed son, was listed in the census of Upper Mount Bethel, PA, which was taken about 1780.  This was just below the Delaware River Gap.  John Potman removed to Nescopack, Luzerne Co., PA, before the 1790 Census and during the 1810 Census was living in Cattaraugus Co., NY, next to Peter Potman.  Peter Potman was listed as an local official in Cattaraugus about 1820.  Peter Putman/Potman was almost certainly Dutch from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. His father John Pottman/Potman would have descended from Victor Pottman, David Pottman, and then Johannes Pootman and Cornelia Bradt of Schenectady, NY. (A lot of this was written by Mark Putnam, the authority on the New York Dutch line)

George David Putman is a son of David Arent and Elizabeth Putman. Dutch family. They were in Otsego County in 1800 and in Cazenovia, Madison County. He will die here March 14, 1829 at age 79. LEWIS PUTNAM  Deerfield, Oneida County

200110  21110. Wonder if he is connected to the Nathan Putnam who is here in 1830. At that time, Nathan is in his 30s and could be the second oldest son shown here. In 1830 Nathan heads the family and there is an older woman there who could be Lewis’ widow. Also wonder if Lewis is connected to Nathan number 614 from Sutton. Eben didn’t have much except one of that Nathan's daughters moved to central New York.

DAVID PUTNAM  Lee, Oneida County

100010  10010. He was born in Connecticut in 1791. He is a son of David Putnam and Miriam Pease of East Windsor, Connecticut. That David was a son of Cornelius Putnam (339) and Elizabeth Perkins of Sutton, Massachusetts and Stafford, Connecticut. David Senior has been here, in Lee, Oneida County since the 1790s. Dave Junior and his wife Nancy Allcott will be in Lee, Oneida County next, probably taking over his daddy's farm, and he will be there through the 1860 census.

JOHN PUTNAM  (PULMAN)  Spafford, Onondaga County

300100  0010. He lives one house away from the following Salter Pulman, and is probably his son.

SALTER PUTMAN (PULMAN)  Spafford, Onondaga County

201110  11010. There was a Salter in 1790 in Albany County who is the guy in Schoharie County now.  They are Pulmans or Pullmans. See the Albany 1790 listing. Family originally from Boston and then Rhode Island, and keep getting indexed as Putmans. I’ll keeping them here, as Pulmans, so others don’t get confused.

PERLEY PUTNAM  Marcellus, Onondaga County

010101  01210. Been here since the early 1800s. His wife is Polly Symonds. He is a son of Asa Putnam and Anna Collins from Brattleboro Vermont. He is number 1721 in Eben's book. He was born March 10, 1767. Okay, bit of interesting info. Perley's mother Anna married Benjamin Symonds after Asa died. Benjamin had previously been married to Mary Davis and Polly was their daughter. So, in this case Perley married his stepsister. Perley will die here in September 1827 and Polly in October 1834.

CORNELIUS PUTNAM  Palmyra, Ontario County

100210  20010. He is Cornelius Putnam the fourth, his wife is Happy Miller. They have been here a few years. Cornelius is a son of Cornelius Putnam 3rd and Ruth Davis. She died in 1827 and he married Lucy Price Sherman, a widow, in 1829. She died in 1832 and he married Matilda Bradley on July 15, 1842 in Wayne County which was formed from this part of Ontario County. Cornelius will die in Wayne County on December 2, 1850. This line goes back Cornelius 4th > Cornelius 3rd > Cornelius 2nd (339) > Cornelius (127) > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

STEPHEN PUTNAM  Palmyra, Ontario County

120010  30010. He is a son of Cornelius Putnam and Libby Davis, and was born in Stafford, Tolland County Connecticut on September 9, 1789. His wife is Dorcas Smith from Massachusetts. They will be in Macedon, Wayne County in 1830. The line is Stephen > Cornelius > Cornelius (339) > Cornelius (127) > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

GEORGE PUTNAM  Ontario, Ontario County

100010  01011. He was born in Connecticut and was a son of John and Mary Putnam. But I have no idea as to who John was. We think he was the guy in Pittsfield, Mass in 1810, Granville, Massachusetts in 1800, and in Ward, Massachusetts in 1790. The older woman is his mother, Mary. George married Sophia Fairman March 7, 1811. He will be here in 1830 and 1840, but this part of Ontario County will be in the newly formed Wayne County. His widow Sophia will be here in 1850.

JOHN PUTNAM  Ontario, Ontario County

010101  31110. He is number 906g, the son of Cornelius Putnam (339) and Elizabeth Perkins. His wife is Prudence Walton. They have been here since the 1790s, and they will be in Wayne County New York in 1830 as this area of Ontario County will be in Wayne County by then. No real move, just the County changed.

PETER PUTNAM  Bloomfield, Ontario County

202210  10200. He is number 2442, a son of Caleb Putnam (1085) who was in Rome, Ontario County and just died there May 24, 1819. Peter and his wife Lucinda Eggleston will be in Lockport, Niagara County in 1830 and 1840. Lucinda will be widowed by 1847, and in 1850 be with her son Lafayette in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at age 52 NY.

JOHN PUTNAM  Bloomfield, Ontario County

He isn’t listed and may well not be here at all. He is number 1741, a son of John Putnam (725) and Abigail Small of Danvers and then Fitchburg, Massachusetts This John was married to Elizabeth Carlton who died here in 1819. They had at least two sons, Eri Carlton Putnam and John Putnam Junior. John was in Boston in 1810, and in the Jefferson County NY neck of the woods around 1811 or 1812, and then moved out here. He had land transactions here from 1814 through 1819. He may well now be in Canada. He will die in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Canada about 1830. I’ll just listing him here as he was here around this time.

POLLY PUTNAM  Pittsford, Ontario County

010000  20110. She would be Polly Rood, the widow of Reuben Putnam (1739). They were married around 1810 back in Vermont. I think he died here around 1819.

THOMAS PUTNAM  Penfield, Ontario County

100100  10010. Best guess is that he is the one who will be in Greece, Monroe County in 1840 and in Orleans, Wayne County by the 1855 State Census. If he is, then he was born in Connecticut according to the 1855 or in Massachusetts according to the 1860. He is the younger brother of George Putnam, who was born in Connecticut and was married to Sophia Fairman. She is widowed there shortly after 1850. We have no ideas as to who their folks were. They seem to be John and Mary Putnam from Ward and Pittsfield, Massachusetts, but have no idea who they are or how the fit in. Thomas married Abigail Grover in Pownal, Bennington County Vermont December 10, 1815.

JEREMIAH PUTNAM  Volney, Oswego County

101301  201010. The current thinking is that this is Jedediah Putnam who has just moved out here from Stonington, New London, Connecticut. Eben Putnam stated that Jedediah died in Volney, N.Y. in 1826 and indeed Jedediah is buried here. The family listing matches exactly what Jedediah's family would have looked like in 1820. We think the census taker made an error and wrote "Jeremiah" instead of “Jedediah.” Makes sense but of course we have no way of proving that. In any case Jedediah's sons Samuel C. and Thomas J. will be listed here in Volney in 1830. This New England family's line goes back Jedediah > John > Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John.
